“Thor’s not a guy anymore.

Thor’s a gal.

Marvel Comics announced that their male hero of yore was no longer worthy to hold the mighty hammer Mjölnir.

(Bear with us.)

"The inscription on Thor’s hammer reads ‘Whosoever holds this hammer, if HE be worthy, shall possess the power of Thor.’ Well it’s time to update that inscription,” said Marvel editor Wil Moss in a statement. “The new Thor continues Marvel’s proud tradition of strong female characters like Captain Marvel, Storm, Black Widow and more. And this new Thor isn’t a temporary female substitute – she’s now the one and only Thor, and she is worthy!”

Wait, there’s more.

“This is not She-Thor. This is not Lady Thor. This is not Thorita. This is THOR,” said writer Jason Aaron. “This is the THOR of the Marvel Universe. But it’s unlike any Thor we’ve ever seen before.”

Thor will be Marvel’s eighth comic featuring a female in its leading role, which the publisher says “aims to speak directly to an audience that long was not the target for Super Hero comic books in America: women and girls.”

So watch your back, Captain America.”

GUYS. GUYS

i dont like this

I do

I LOVE this. Marvels campaign to make comics appeal to people other than straight white cisgendered males is a big step forward. A black Captain America (Sam Wilson!!) and female Thor are only some of the more recent changes. For those who arent very familiar with the comic community, here are some other big steps forward.

Ms. Marvel, one of Marvel Comics ‘bombshell’ female characters, recently assumed the mantle of Captain Marvel, from whom she derives her powers (which is kinda like Supergirl taking over for Superman) and in her place, a young Muslim girl became the new Ms. Marvel, and both characters are headlinjng their own comic books.

Before that, in the Ultimate Marvel universe (where heroes can die permanently) Peter Parker is dead and in his place, a black hispanic teenager named Miles Morales becomes Spider-Man.

On top of those changes to the more popular superhero names in Marvel, there are dozens of minor LGBTQ characters that have been introduced or have come out in the past decade. Its ballsy, and I’m glad theyre taking initiative to become more diverse.

Because with the popularity Marvel is accumulating from one world-dominating box office success after another, if theyre using it to promote equality, then hell yes I will pay money for their comics.
